co How Much Time Should You Spend On SEO? |

How important is search engine optimization (SEO)? Is it so important that you should pore over every word on your blog and website to find ways to improve your SEO so that your content ranks higher in the search engines?

It’s become fashionable in the last couple of years to claim that SEO is dead and that you should just simply write “great content.” Rand Fishkin of Moz says “good unique content” must die. In other words, quit saying it and quit relying on it because there’s more to good optimization than simply writing great original content. I’ll have to agree.

So, between the “SEO is dead” mantra and the other extreme–spend every waking minute you have coming up with ways to optimize your content–there should be a middle ground. Is there?

Why SEO is Still Important, But …

If you’re like a lot of small business owners, you can’t spend every waking minute of your existence doing any one thing. SEO is still important. You can’t ignore it. There’s no guarantee your content will rank just because it’s good. However, if you spend all of your time obsessing over optimization elements, you might not get any work done.

Some online marketers publish a blog post then tweak their headlines until they’re perfect, then work on their meta tags, then build inbound links, etc. All of that is well and good, but what’s the potential payoff?

You have to think about your ultimate goal. You are building a business.

If you have one blog post that is getting a lot of traffic and has respectable search engine rankings, it could be worth it to see if you can improve that post’s optimization to push it up further in the rankings and increase your traffic–especially if it is converting traffic to customers. But you don’t really need to do that for every blog post. Just do it for the ones that have the best potential.

Content marketing is about priorities. You have to decide how you are going to spend your time and make sure you make the most of every minute. Sometimes, that means improving your optimization.
