co 98% Of SBMs Use E-mail Marketing |

Five years ago, 64% of small business owners were using e-mail for marketing, according to a survey conducted by Constant Contact. Today, that number is 98%.

The survey revealed some other interesting statistics, as well. For instance:

  • 87% of small businesses are using social media; five years ago it was 10%
  • 44% use event marketing; five years ago it was 20%
  • 40% say social media amplifies word-of-mouth referrals; five years ago, 32% said the same thing
  • 59% say it’s harder running a business today than five years ago
  • 84% are using more online tools than five years ago

One thing is for sure, small businesses are doing a lot more Internet marketing today than they were five years ago. Most of that, it seems, is e-mail marketing and social media marketing.

Small Business Mavericks cautions small business owners against using statistics like these to make important marketing decisions regarding your own business. You should do what is right for YOUR business. That could mean e-mail marketing, it could mean social media, or it could mean blogging or PPC marketing. You should get to know your customers then design your online marketing strategy based on what is important for your business and your customers. That might mean getting your online marketing evaluated by a professional to gauge how effective it is. There’s no better time to start than right now.
