co The Importance Of Site Structure |

Website structure is one of the most important parts of web design. It can make or break your website, and your business.

So how do you ensure that your website architecture is sound, solid, and helps your site visitors?

First and foremost, you have to define what your site is about. What is your USP (Unique Selling Proposition)? How are you different from the competition?

Once you’ve established where you stand in the marketplace, do some keyword research. Find out what people are searching for in relation to your niche. Get a list of your top 100 keywords and delete any that are not specifically relevant to your business.

Now, take that list and group your keywords into categories. Put all like keywords together. For instance, if you are an auto mechanic, you might have the following categories of keywords:

  • Brakes
  • Transmission
  • Engine maintenance
  • Tires and rims
  • Fluids

This is just an example. You’ll have to do your own keyword research. But once you’ve decided on your keyword list, go through each category and make your broadest keyword the top keyword in that category. Make that keyword your top level keyword for the category and that keyword will be the label on your navigation menu.

There isn’t just one way to structure a website. Figure out the best and easiest way to navigate through the information you want to present on your website. What will be the most helpful to your site visitors?

Once you figure out how your visitors will best be served by your site structure, you can begin designing your website. Don’t do any website development until you figure out how to structure your website.
