co Who Is Your Host Neighbor? |

Web hosting is a necessity for online marketing. Well, if you want a website, that is, and why would you do Internet marketing without a website?

One of the important factors to consider when setting up a hosting account is who your neighbors are. This is important because if you get put on a server that is a bad neighborhood – several of your hosting neighbors are spammers – then you could get a bad reputation by association. Your choice of hosting companies has a lot to do with that reputation.

Most hosting companies offer a cheap hosting plan where you share server space with other customers. In most instances, that doesn’t cause problems. A reputable hosting company will go to great pains to prevent spam accounts, or run them out when they are detected. But they aren’t perfect.

The good news is you can find out who your hosting neighbors are. If you suspect that you might be on a bad server or in a bad neighborhood, then you can request that your hosting company move your site to a new server. If they refuse, go elsewhere.

So how do you find out who your hosting neighbors are? There’s a small search engine called Blekko. You have to sign up for an account to see your SEO data, but once you have an account at Blekko you can search for www.yoursite.com/seo and Blekko will show you several SEO stats for your website including the sites that are hosted on your server. You can then do some research on those sites to see whether they have good reputations or not (check their backlinks) and if you don’t like what you see, request your site be moved to a new server.
