Is it possible to spend too much time on social media?
This is a question that I hear every now and again. You might think my immediate response would be negative. After all, I teach small business owners how to incorporate social media into their daily routines. But I have to tell you that I think you can spend too much time on social media.
Understand, however, there are no set number of hours that you should spend promoting yourself through any one medium. There is no rule or law to govern this. So how do you determine how much time is too much time?
It’s pretty simple really: Can you justify the amount of time you spend using social media by the return that you receive from your efforts? In other words, what is your social media ROI?
It’s not an easy thing to measure. But it’s something that you should pay attention to. If you are spend 4 to 5 hours a day on social media and getting 1 new customer a month, that’s probably too much. If you spend 1 hour a day on social media and get 1 customer a month, then it could be worth it – especially if those customers turn into repeat customers.
So keep in mind that there is no hard and fast rule about how much time you should spend promoting yourself through social media, but look for a good return that makes it worth your while.
