Social media marketing has picked up speed and become an important part of doing business online. Rather than discuss the whys, let’s discuss something much more important – the best approach.
There really is no “right” or “wrong” way to approach social media marketing. There are effective methods and ineffective methods to market yourself through any medium, social media included. So the question to ask ourselves is this, What is the most effective way to use social media for marketing?
I think it all boils down to one thing: Building relationships. There are plenty of people “marketing” themselves online by sending out links to their content in hopes that people will read and buy. But it’s rare that it happens that way.
A far more effective way to manage your social media is simply to engage with your audience. Discuss their needs and wants. What is important to them? Learn what your audience is after then provide it.
Call it relationship marketing or conversational marketing. That’s what it is. You build relationships, engage in conversation and people will want to do business with you – if you have what they need. Whether we are talking about Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon, Digg or another social service, start by engaging your audience and building relationships. Then go from there.
