If daily visitors are a guide then Twitter is still an infant in social media circles. That doesn’t mean it’s not useful for online marketing. In fact, according to Edison Research, Twitter may be as useful, if not more, than Facebook. Now that’s a big statement, but it’s all about engagement – look at some of these numbers in relation to Twitter.
42% learn about products/services;
41% provide opinions about products and services;
31% ask for opinions about products and services;
28% look for discounts or sales;
That’s a high engagement level and it would be interesting to see what sort of engagement Facebook. In general, we know that Facebook is used predominantly to stay in touch with friends and family. Twitter on the other hand hasn’t really established a user direction.
This could be one of the reasons why the engagement is so high. The other interesting component of Twitter is the number of users who access the site using cell phones. Almost 66% of Twitter users access the site at some stage using their mobile device. That certainly opens the door to some interesting social media marketing activities, particularly if you have a bricks and mortar outlet.
Twitter is not growing quickly, but those that are using the service are engaging in larger proportions than many other online media sites.
