One of the “Web 2.0” questions I hear from my clients most often is, “Should I consider having a blog?”
My answer, of course, is always yes – blogs are great for building rapport with your customers, for promoting your business and for having a “voice” online in terms of contributing to the conversation going on about your business or your industry on the web – particularly if you don’t yet have your own website, a blog is a great way to get started online.
But the most important reason I tell my clients that they need a blog is for the search engine optimization benefits – a blog is like search engine optimization magic, because each new post that you create (if you do it right) serves as a relevant link back to your website – and search engines love relevant links.
It’s the ‘doing it right’ part that was always a little fuzzy for my clients – I’d get them set up with their blog and then they’d kind-of look at me like, “now what?” – so I put together a little blogging handbook for small business owners called, “Small Business Blogging Essentials: How to Use Your Blog as a Marketing Tool.” It’s not filled with hype or a bunch of Web 2.0 jargon – but it does give you the basics you need to know to get started blogging for your business on the right foot.
