There’s a new social search engine in town:
HashAtIt.com says they can make it easy to combine all the metadata tags (those # symbols followed by a word or unspaced phrase) and look them up. This means any trend you want to follow on Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter can be monitored on all sites at once. It’s real-time, too, and that means a marketer can catch the wave of a trend and ride it as long as it’s moving.
Here’s how it works — you see a #hashtag that catches your attention on any subject at all, anywhere. Type it into the search box at HashAtIt.com and you’ll get a compilation of what’s going on. Click the share button to follow, join, or share the conversation.
Social media can be one of Internet marketing’s greatest assets because you pick up on what people are talking about. Getting news updates tells you what has already happened, but being able to track #hashtags easily tells you what is happening right now. But it was tricky and time-consuming before this great search engine showed up.
I could see this as a tracking tool for your product tweets. It could help specialty retailers predict fads (always a challenge) and give you a good idea on which branding strategies are working and what isn’t. It’s got a user-friendly interface, and you can create #hashtag boards to embed on your sites for your own followers. The boards are customizable so you can mute posts you don’t want and filter them the way you need for your purposes.
I like that it’s free. I like the boards because they can be tailored to fit. I like that there’s some differences from other metadata tracking platforms, and I think it’s going to be interesting to see how many ways this will be useful.
I’d love to hear from you in the comments once you’ve looked HashAtIt.com over and get your ideas on possible uses.
